IN SUPPORT OF THE LOMÉ INITIATIVE
The IFF supports the Brazzaville Foundation in its efforts to invigorate existing policy initiatives undertaken by the international community to tackle the problem of substandard and falsified medicines on the African continent. It is estimated that 128 countries worldwide are affected by falsified medicines. 42% of all falsified medicines discovered since 2013 were in Africa. In 2015, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene estimated that over 122,000 children under five die each year due to poor-quality anti-malaria medication in sub-Saharan Africa. The historic Lomé Initiative in January 2019 had African leaders sign a Political Declaration to introduce new criminal penalties against traffickers and shine a light on this deadly scourge.
